The president was received by the Enugu, Ebonyi and Abia State governors, as well as traditional rulers and top security personnel on his arrival.
After touching down in Enugu, the president proceeded to Abakaliki township stadium in Ebonyi State for the commencement of the tour.

This is Buhari’s first visit to the region since the inception of his administration in 2015, and it’s a trip laced with significance in light of separatist pressures and sweeping feelings of marginalisation among Igbos.
The presidency had in an earlier statement assured that his government does not discriminate against any part of Nigeria, least of all the south-east.
“Let me reiterate my words to Southeast Leaders who visited me at the State House last month: My administration will not discriminate against any part of Nigeria.
“I will again assure the people of the southeast that we are investing in infrastructure projects that are of critical importance to the region: the Second Niger Bridge, the East-West Road, the Coastal Rail, power projects – these and more will benefit the region and unlock economic potential.

“We are collaborating with the Chinese government to deliver these projects, and have taken very seriously our counterpart funding obligations.
“I look forward to my visit, and to continuing to work to ensure that every part of Nigeria benefits from our programmes and policies,” he stated.
The visit is undoubtedly a welcome development in terms of fostering unity and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians, particularly those in the south-east.
It also comes bare days to the eagerly anticipated Anambra gubernatorial polls, an election which is fraught with threats from members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).
