The coauthor of the book WETATi Collective Empowerment Short Stories (2013), Brenda Chavis is a digital artist with an African-American heritage. She has been involved all her life in the United States of America (USA) on culture of promoting gender issues. She is the Chief Operations Officer of a US-based group Women Empowered to Achieve the Impossible, which has transformed to We’re Empowered to Achieve the impossible (WETATi).
She was also part of Dr. Margaret Dureke’s latest book Think, Believe, ACT & Grow Rich. She added that the book should be in every household in Nigeria, for it was the essence of mental nutrients needed everyday to enlist the country to move, do something and make things happen.
She told this reporter online that “there were many times when I had to defend some family members or friends on some issues of gender. I must admit, God has really smiled upon me throughout my life and career. I did not really meet with much opposition as I was growing up. Even when I graduated from college, I remember my first job as the Executive Secretary to the Executive Director of the Georgia Department of Labour.
“He was considered a white racist and, there I was, his African-American secretary. He was one of those who thought women should be left in the home to cook, clean and tend to the kids. In the end, he really softened. It was nothing but God making my enemies my footstool.
“He later became kind to me and others equally talked about how they could not believe how he had changed. After joining WETATi I have been thrust more into the real issues that face our women and men. “We have done so much in the communities to creatively uplift the women, young girls and boys as well as men. We recently partnered with the Mayor of Bladensburg, MD to conduct a “Back to School” event in that city. It was a great success.
“We have quarterly business series events that take place at the University of Maryland to teach individuals the basics on how to start their own businesses, network, get their books published, how to find financing for their businesses, and a plethora of other areas.
“WETATi has become the ‘go to’ organisation in many communities we serve, especially for those who want to get things done. Each year we conduct our annual International Convention at the University of Maryland (UMCP) in College Park, MD and, next year, we will celebrate our 5th year anniversary.
“It is where men and women from the entire globe meet to share creative ideas, network, and learn of innovative ways to make our communities and families stronger so that our lives can become better. At our annual convention in 2013, the University of Maryland College Park sponsored 12 young ladies to attend. “Their lives were never the same,” they said so themselves. As a matter of fact, they were so impacted they decided they wanted to have WETATi on their campus so other young women could experience on a regular basis what they did.
“In the fall of that year, it became official, and WETATi-UMCP was born. Other colleges and universities are now waking up to the idea that we must embrace our youth in their creative years. After all, they are our future.”
She noted that empowering the youths through the creative industry would go along way in building the nation. She said, “Nigeria being the most populous country in Africa, and also considered the mega city of Africa, with many oil and gas fields should be leading the world in many areas; yet, because of the years of corruption in government, we see cronyism, favoritism and nepotism.
“Nigeria’s embracing of the WETATi Center 4 Creative Thinking, Leadership, and Business Development will be just the tip of the iceberg. WETATi’s mission and purpose is conducted through its many other empowerment programmes including, Publishing and Writing, Public Speaking, Financial Literacy, etc.
