Thousands of young women are believed to have been trafficked from the UK to Ireland over the summer to undergo female genital mutilation (FGM).
Police and health officials have been issued warnings over the revelations, the Irish Independent has reported.
FGM, originating in countries like Kenya and Nigeria, is the practice of removing or cutting the female genitalia.
Words from a FGM cutter
Half-blind Anna-Moora Ndege, aged 86, has been a cutter in Kenya for more than 70 years and uses a razor blade on her victims.
She: ‘Girls are cut to ensure they remain faithful because the sexual organ is not there anymore.
‘When you are cut you will not be a slut looking for men here and there like a prostitute.
‘You are docile, waiting for your husband because after you are cut, sex is for having children not for anything else.’
Over there, the procedure is usually carried out with a razor blade with little medical guidance.
It is feared that young girls were moved over to Ireland in the summer because it coincided with the school holidays.
Ireland’s Department of Health estimate that more than 3,900 girls and women living there have suffered FGM.
