Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of zone three, Mohammed Jinjiri Abubakar, has ordered the three commands under him to immediately begin patrols on routes or anticipated flash points of clashes between farmers and Fulani herdsmen.
The AIG whose command include Adamawa, Gombe and Taraba gave the order yesterday in Gombe during a tour of the Police Command where he said the patrol was expected to last till March next year when harvests would have been concluded.
The AIG, who regretted that most of the herdsmen are foreigners, said they have caused untold hardship and destroyed millions of naira worth of foodstuff. He said few days ago herdsmen invaded his farm, leaving immeasurable level of destruction.
In a parley with members of Gombe State Police Community Relations Committee, the AIG urged traditional rulers to keep “eagle eye” on their communities and work hand-in-hand with the police in the fight against crime.
He said the zone had suffered untold devastation of lives and property in the hands of insurgents, especially in the last three years, but assured that with intensified onslaught on the insurgents, their activities are gradually waning.
He urged members of the public to intensify information sharing with security agents and also thoroughly investigate strangers in their midst as such persons were always the ones that foment trouble or turn out to be terrorists.
Earlier in the palace of the Emir of Gombe, Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III, the DIG appreciated the interest and effort of the monarch in ensuring peace in the state. He said even with the activities of the insurgents, the police still kept faith by discharging their duties diligently.
The emir commended the police and said the Emirate enjoys 100 per cent support from them, especially during this period of insurgency.
