The Deposed Deji of Akure, Adepoju Adesina at the weekend demanded a sum of N500m damages for alleged defamation of his character by the Akure Chiefs.
Last Tuesday, the Akure Chiefs led by the Lisa, High Chief James Olusoga addressed a news conference through the Asiwaju of Akure, Prof Olu Agbi condemning the alleged procession by the former Akure monarch from the High Court premises to his ruling house.
Adesina was in court to defend his case of dethronement five years ago for alleged assault on his wife, late Olori Bolanle.
Akure Chiefs levelled various allegations against the former monarch including “turning the stool to hide out for young men of shady characters who had become regular guests of the deji” and that “he was most of the time seen in the midst of these people consuming substances which are not only illegal but also criminal.”
However, Adesina, through his lawyer, Lawrence Dare in a letter sent to Prof Olu Agbi who read the text on behalf of Akure Chiefs, said the statement was too defamatory and harsh”.
The lawyer said “Our client was bombarded with several calls received from numerous friends and admirers that read the wicked and offensive statement issued without lawful justification.
“Our client has suffered irreparable damage and as such, he is demanding for a written apology which must be published in four national dailies.”
Besides, he demanded for a sum of N500m damages for defamation, stressing that the payment and written apology must be within the stipulated time of seven days from the date of service of the letter.
He threatened to institute a legal action if Adesina’s demands were not met within the stipulated time.
