Improving teachers’ welfare one of my priorities – Education Minister

Education Minister, Adamu Adamu shake hands with President Muhammadu Buhari

Improving the condition of service of teachers is among my top priorities, Malam Adamu Adamu, the Minister of Education, has pledged.

Adamu made the pledge on Monday in Abuja at a meeting he held with directors in the Federal Ministry of Education.

He listed under funding, poor teaching infrastructure, absence of laboratory and research equipment and brain-drain from tertiary institutions as other challenges facing the education sector he would tackle as priorities.

Adamu said he would also tackle poor enrolment and lack of access to education that had forced millions of school-age children out of school and millions of others competing for limited spaces in the tertiary institutions.

“The ministry of Education under my stewardship will confront these problems with all the seriousness, commitment and strong political will to ensure that we address them once and for all.

“Allowing these problems to persist is akin to surrendering the fate of our country to ignorance; we cannot afford to do.

“I want to call on you to join hands with me and the Minister of State to commence this all-important journey.

“We will pursue the reformation of primary Education through regulation and incentives; we will review and enforce all regulations relating to staffing, capacity building and quality assurance,” he said.

The minister said that his administration would incentivise enrolment into primary education by working with states and local governments to work out modalities for offering free meals to the pupils.

He said that there would enabling enactment that would make it mandatory for all school-age children to enroll in school.
Adamu said that the Universal Basic Education Commission would be re-organised to live up to its mandate.

The minister, who expressed his readiness to carry all the directors along in decision-making process, warned that acts of indolence, indiscipline and corruption would not be tolerated.

Earlier in her comments, Dr Shade Yemi-Esan, the new Permanent Secretary in the ministry, congratulated Adamu on his appointment.

She described the minister as a “fearless, outspoken and a seasoned writer” and expressed optimism that he would bring his wealth of experience to bear in moving the ministry to the next level of development.
