ABUJA, Saturday
As the war against Boko Haram insurgents intensifies, President Muhammadu Buhari has made a morale-boosting visit to troops.
Mr Buhari decorated some soldiers and gave hope to more than 15,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) in Adamawa state.
The president awarded three injured soldiers with the Purple Heart medal for gallantry.
He said the honour was an appreciation of the soldiers’ “heroic” contribution to the ongoing fight against the insurgents.
“These medals are in recognition of your sacrifices. I hope they will inspire you to give more to the nation. I also urge you to maintain your determination to bring peace to our county,” he told the soldiers.
“With what I have seen, I believe Boko Haram are about to be defeated and I urge you to quickly flush these criminals from wherever they may still be hiding.”
CALLS FOR VIGILANCE
He urged the residents to remain vigilant so as to prevent the insurgents from carrying out more attacks.
Those decorated were wounded in Madagali and Gubla towns.
Buhari also took a message of hope to Nigerians in the north east displaced from their homes by the insurgency.
He assured IDPs in Yola town that the government was working hard to ensure that they resume normal life soon.
Mr Buhari told residents of Malkohi Camp that they would be working in their farms in the next planting season.
The president, who spoke in Hausa, said the government was determined more than ever to end the Boko Haram menace.
“My government is doing everything possible to rebuild your homes, schools, hospitals and roads,” Mr Buhari said.
“I know that most of you are farmers and your lands have been destroyed, but we are doing everything possible to end this problem,” he said.
He praised the Adamawa state government, the national emergency agency and other firms for helping the IDPs.
The president also asked the residents to cooperate with security agents and report any suspicious Boko Haram insurgents.
