Men of Enugu State Police Command have arrested two prime suspects in the kidnap of the Chief Imam of Uniersity of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) Central Mosque, Sheik Adams Idoko.
Sheik Idoko was kidnapped at his hometown, Ogrute in Igbo-Eze North Local Government area of the State in the second week of September and regained his freedom after spending a week in the kidnappers den.
It was however gathered that the two prime suspects in Idoko’s kidnap were arrested on Thursday, November 26, 2015, at Opi in Nsukka local government area of the State by a joint team, comprising of policemen from Nsukka Police Division and members of the public.
Spokesman for the State Police Command, Ebere Amaraizu who confirmed this report in a statement on Friday, identified the suspects as Sunday Odoba (23) and Agbo Chijioke (38).
Amaraizu said the suspects allegedly belonged to a notorious kidnap gang that has been terrorizing Nsukka and its environs especially Opi,Edeoballa town.
He said most recently, the two suspects were linked to the kidnap of Sheik Adam Idoko, the Chief Imam of UNN Central Mosque.
The statement reads: “Recently Enugu State Command of the Nigeria Police increased the tempo of security network within Nsukka which is aimed at fishing out hoodlums that have been a thorn in the flesh to the people of the area and its environs.
“The strategy which is intelligent led paid off on Thursday November 26, 2015 when the operatives of Nsukka Division of the Command in partnership with the members of the public struck at Opi in Nsukka local government area of Enugu State at about 4.45pm of the said date and nabbed two notorious suspected kidnap kingpins identified as one Sunday Odoba of about 23 years and Agbo Chijioke also about 38 years, all from Ogbozalla Opi in Nsukka local government area of Enugu State.
“The suspects are members of a notorious kidnap gang that has been terrorizing Nsukka and its environs especially at Opi, Edeoballa Nsukka and most recently,Igbo-Eze North where they kidnapped Sheik Idoko” Amaraizu said.
Amaraizu disclosed that the suspects are now helping the police in their investigations which had already commenced in full scale in relation to their nefarious activities as it concerns kidnapping within Nsukka and its environs.
According to the police spokesman, they are equally begging for forgiveness and blaming their involvement to peer group influence and the need to get reach quick syndrome.
He, however, said the command appreciated the efforts of the members of the public especially the Opi Neighbourhood Watch Group for their continual partnership with the police.
Amaraizu assured that the command would continue to partner with the members of the public and relevant agencies to ensure a crime free yuletide and further revealed that the onslaught against crime and criminality would not be taken for granted as the command has vowed to sustain the peaceful atmosphere the state is known for.
