Some dust is being raised over the appointments made into the Nigerian Prisons Service with allegations of lopsidedness and failure to adhere to the principle of federal character.Investigations in the Benue State formation of the NPS shows that the recent deployment of about 50 Junior officers cadre to the state is generating ripples among the hierarchy of the service in the state .
Sunday Mirror investigation revealed that the formation in the state gathered that those whose appointment were backdated were the last set to be recruited towards the tail end of the last administration without recourse to due process. It was further gathered that the appointments into the junior cadre appeared to have been skewed in favour of a particular ethnic group.
Sources told our correspondent that this type of imbalance in the appointment, which did not reflect federal character and consequent backdated in their appointments to appear as if they were recruited before the end of last administration which is unacceptable and urged the federal government to revisit the case.
When contacted Benue State Controller of the Nigerians Prisons Service, Mr. Oyigoecho Ogbole, has confirmed the backdating of employment particulars of the junior staff stressing that the ambiguity is unfortunate. However, efforts to ascertain the federal character quota regarding the appointments of nationalities in the formation were not successful.
It would be recalled that crises had been brewing for some time now over lopsidedness of one particular tribe dominating the formation insisting that federal character must reflect with view to address imbalance among ethnic nationalities in the country.
