Protests Erupt Against Increase In Electricity Tariff And Darkness In Lagos
Protesters stormed the street of Ikeja Lagos today to express their opposition to Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOS) over the increase in tariffs and darkness.
Activists, who were prevented from gaining entrance to the Lagos State House of Assembly, occupied the entrance to the complex demanding to speak with the Speaker of the House.
Barrister Adeola Samuel Ilori, a spokesperson for the group, said that the basis for their agitation was the impending increase in an electricity tariff by the DISCOS despite the Federal High Court Injunction against such action.
The protesters chanted songs against DISCOS such as,“No Light! They Are Collecting Money! Thieves!” and carried placards with slogans such as: “Say No To Power Failure! Say No To Increment!”, “No Constant Light! No Payment!”, “No More Fixed Charges Nigerians Are Being Robbed”, and “No More Paying For Darkness No To Tariff Increase!”.
The demands of the group include, "an end to estimated billing for helpless consumers, provision of prepaid meters for all consumers, and the total removal of service charges of N750 in consumers' bills."
