Nine persons lost their lives, on Friday, in Asaba, Delta State, when the bus in which they were travelling was ran over by a truck belonging to a popular cement company.
Confirming the incident, which occurred on the Benin-Asaba highway, Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, Mr Rindom Kumven, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the truck crushed three vehicles.
Kumven said that the crushed vehicles were a Golf car, Mercedes truck carrying blocks, and an 18-seater bus, adding that the cement comapny's truck, which was travelling from Benin direction, was speeding.
According to him, the three vehicles were on same lane when the truck, which could not apply brakes due to high speed, rammed into them and all the three vehicles caught fire immediately.
He said that the number plates of the vehicles could not be ascertained because they had been burnt beyond recognition.
Kumven said that nine bodies that were burnt beyond recognition had been recovered and deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba.
He could not, however, say the vehicles in which the dead were in before the incident, which occurred in front of NNPC Mega Filling Station, close to Asaba International Airport.
An eyewitness, Amos Olayinka, told NAN that immediately after the crash, driver of the truck fled the scene.
Olayinka said that the vehicles caught fire immediately and there was no way victims could be rescued.
