Two Louisiana marshals have been accused of murder and attempted murder after opening fire on a vehicle earlier this week, killing the 6-year-old boy inside and wounding his father, state police announced Friday.
Norris Greenhouse Jr., 23, and Derrick Stafford, 32, are each charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder, state police said in a press release on Facebook.
They were booked Friday night and remained in custody at the Avoyelles Parish Detention Center, state police spokesman Scott Moreau tells PEOPLE.
Both Greenhouse Jr. and Stafford have retained counsel but have not yet appeared in court, Moreau says.
It was unclear if they have entered a plea.
Jeremy Mardis was shot and killed Tuesday night and his father, Chris Few, was seriously wounded after marshals opened fire on Few's vehicle following a pursuit in Marksville.
Earlier reports that the shooting was triggered by Few backing his vehicle toward the marshals or that Few was armed and firing at the time of the shooting have been debunked by officials, according to The Guardian.
It remains unclear what led the pursuit of Few or what went on in the moments before the shooting.
Few's vehicle appeared to be perpendicular to the marshals at the time of the shooting, and they fired into the driver's side, according to The Guardian, citing the state police investigation.
Mardis had been diagnosed with autism, Few's stepfather, Morris German, told the AP.
Mardis "loved everything, everybody," he said.
Mardis died at the scene after being shot multiple times in the head and torso, Avoyolles Parish Coroner LJ Mayeux said, according to The Guardian.
Few remains hospitalized with bullet fragments in his brain and lung, German told the AP.
In a Friday news conference announcing the charges, Col. Michael Edmonson, state police superintendent, said body camera footage from the shooting was "the most disturbing thing I've seen, and I will leave it at that," according to Reuters.

Greenhouse Jr. and Stafford were both working secondary jobs as marshals, and were two of four officers involved at the scene, according to the Associated Press.
"We'll see where it takes us," Edmonson said about possible future arrests, according to the AP.
In a statement, Marksville City/Ward 2 Marshal Floyd Voinche Sr. said he had "fully cooperated" with the state police investigation.
"I have full confidence in the Louisiana State Police and its investigation and I intend to continue to cooperate," Voinche said in the statement.
PEOPLE was not immediately able to reach Voinche for comment.
Three of the four officers at the scene were part-time Ward 2 marshals, he said in the statement. All were full-time employees of other law enforcement agencies.
