999 crews were called to a North Yorkshire school after pupils collapsed during the Remembrance Day service.

40 pupils were treated by paramedics at Oakwood Academy in Clotherholme Road, Ripon, after pupils reported feeling unwell.

Four had fainted during the service in the main hall between 11am and 11.30am. More pupils subsequently reported feeling unwell.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service sent hazardous materials experts to the scene, but the all-clear has been issued.

Station manager Dave Winspear said pupils reported feeling nauseous and dizzy and that more children felt anxious. He said the issue then "escalated" as more pupils reported concerns.

He told the media: “I would like to assure you, we have carried out a very thorough assessment and found no hazardous materials or anything untoward in the school environment.”

Superintendent Nick Hunter at North Yorkshire Police, said this evening: “In cases like this where we have such a high number of people fall ill in such a small environment, it is our responsibility to take this extremely seriously and ensure a multi-agency response to fully investigate the circumstances.

“The safety of all involved is paramount and we will take all necessary measures to ensure everyone’s safety.

“Thankfully in this case, it was nothing serious and the incident has been brought to a safe conclusion.”

Mike Shanahan, Head of Special Operations at Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust, said its staff were able to provide effective care and treatment for the large number of patients on scene and liaised closely with wider NHS services in the area.

"We are pleased that everyone has now been able to return to their homes and that our contribution, coupled with the collaborative approach with the head teacher and police and fire service colleagues, helped to ensure that the incident was well-managed and resulted in a safe outcome."
