Ado Bayero’s Son Drags Emir Sanusi To Court

Ado Bayero’s Son Drags Emir Sanusi To Court

The son of the former Emir of Kano, the late Ado Bayero, Usman Ado Bayero and two others has instituted a case at the Kano state High Court challenging the emergence of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 14th Emir of Kano, praying the court to sack him with immediate effect.

The plaintiffs, Usman Ado Bayero, Sadiq Yahaya and Hamza Madaki Cigari are seeking the court’s intervention in what they say is ”a number of irregularities and breaches of protocol that culminated in the selection process which produces Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.”

Counsel to the plaintiffs Lady Rose Mbata Esq informed the court that an Appeal Court sitting in Kaduna state had restrained one of the King Makers in the person of Alhaji Bello Abubakar Tuta from parading himself as the Sarkin Dawaki Mai Tuta and a King Maker in the Kano Emirate, yet he went ahead and took part in the selection process of the new Emir of Kano after the demise of the former Emir.

Mbata went on to argue that Alhaji Tuta’s participation in the selection process was tantamount to contempt of the court, adding that all action he took in that regard is construed as null, void and of no value whatsoever.

She also submitted that the former King Maker who was re-instated by the Court of Appeal, Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan’Agundi, was not invited by the Emirate Council after the demise of the late Emir to took part in the selection process and exercise his constitutional duty as King Maker.

The plaintiffs prayed to court to nullify the selection of Sanusi as the Emir of Kano as well as declare all appointments, dethronement and other actions he took as invalid since his selection does not follow due process and called for fresh election of the Emir of Kano.

They also prayed to court to direct Kano Emirate Council to duly recognize Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan’Agundi as the legitimate Sarkin Dawaki Mai Tuta and a King Maker among other things.

However, counsel to the respondents, Barrister Sunusi Ali faulted the arguments of the plaintiffs describing the issue before the court as a mere waste of time.

Meanwhile, after listening to arguments from both sides, the presiding Judge, Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu fixed Tuesday, December 22 for continuation of the case and orders that all parties to the case be served with all relevant papers.

Recall that last month, Sanusi sacked Lamido Bayero, the eldest son of the late Emir Ado Bayero, from his post as Ciroman Kano and District Head of Gwale.

The decision was taken by the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor following the refusal of Lamido to return to his duty few months after Sanusi ascended the throne.
