Suspected assailants have killed a woman, identified as Itohan Enagbare, and her four-year-old daughter, Iwinosa, in Benin, the Edo State capital.
It was learnt that the incident occurred at the residence of the deceased on Osaze Street, off Dumez Road.
It was gathered that the unknown assailants stormed the 28-year-old woman’s residence at about 1pm on Wednesday, dragged her outside and stabbed her to death.
Sources said the four-year-old girl’s loud cry when her mother was attacked also caused the killers to hack her to death before they fled the scene.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Osifo, confirmed the incident, adding that the landlady of the victims had been arrested in connection with their death.
“There is one arrest so far; that is the landlady of the late woman. Information got to the police that they had been having issues. And since then, the woman (landlady) had been threatening the late woman.
“The landlady’s son, who is also a suspect, is on the run. The landlady is in police custody and undergoing interrogation.”
Meanwhile, at least five persons have been feared dead in different parts of Benin, following a clash between suspected members of rival cult groups.
It was learnt that four persons were killed on the Powerline Road, beside Ogida Police Barracks on Monday.
Some suspected cultists were said to have stormed a barber’s at Usen quarters, where they shot the barber and left some of his customers with varying degrees of injuries.
While confirming the incident, the PPRO said a suspect was apprehended.
He said, “There was one casualty during a cult-related violence on Lagos Street and one person was arrested.”
