Colonel Sambo Dasuki and former president Goodluck Jonathan
Reports credited Newsrescue showed that former president Goodluck Jonathan actually made a promise of installing embattled former National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki, as the new Sultan of Sokoto.
This promise stemmed from the allegations that Dasuki had swindled billions of naira meant for security in the country and was scared of the combination of the then campaigners, Muhammadu Buhari and Yemi Osinbajo to root out his misdemeanors.
The fear was also that the new administration would embark on a deep investigation into the procurement of arms meant for the war against insurgency in the country whereas the former president would do no such thing if he had remained in power.
In fairness, Dasuki’s family, by right, can have a shot at the throne in the event that it becomes vacant, but they were not favoured to occupy the post based on the rotations.
The former NSA’s father, Sultan Ibrahim Dasuki was reportedly deposed from the seat by former military president, late Sani Abacha’s government in 1996 and this was has reportedly not sat well with the Sambo family, for which the ex-NSA may still hold a grudge against the country.
Although the selection of the Sultan is done by the state government, the presidency can sponsor and blackmail to ensure that its wishes take prominence.
And Jonathan promised Dasuki the throne which is currently being occupied by Sultan Saadu Abubakar, son of Siddiq Abubakar III who inherited the throne from his elder brother, Muhammadu Maccido.
Unfortunately, the former president lost the election to Buhari and has since exposed his aide to the trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) which is prosecuting him alongside proprietor of DAAR Communications, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, who is said to be involved in the scam.
Below are some allegations leveled against Dasuki:
1. He purchased refurbished MI Helicopters as new for the Nigerian Airforce from Belarus at the cost of $84 million per one which the market value is $15 million. Two have already crashed and killed the pilots.
2. He purchased a substandard UAV (Drones) from China at an exorbitant rate of $260 million as against a brand new UAV which was offered to Nigeria by Elbit Systems of Israel who are the pioneers and leading UAV Manufacturers in the world at a lower cost of $16.5 million per one and the Chinese UAV crashed on its maiden flight at Mafa village in Borno State.
3. He purchased and installed a Command and Control Centre in his office from an Israeli company called NICE at an exorbitant price of $80 million which the market value is put at $15 million. His office is not an Operational Agency by law as it serves only as an advisory role to the Presidency on security and intelligence matters so he doesn’t need a Command and Control Centre and since its installation it has never worked.
4. He has done a deal with the Chadian and Nigerien Governments to pay them cash to fight the Boko Haram on behalf of Nigeria for which he collected a huge amount of money and paid peanuts.
5. The South African money for arms scandal.
