Kuje is dirty, FCT minister tells chairman

Kuje is dirty, FCT minister tells chairman

Children play in front of their shanties at New Kuchigoro IDP camp.

Drama occurred yesterday in Kuje town, Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), when the minister  of  FCT, Muhammad Musa Bello, publicly had an exchange with the chairman of the council, Shaban Ishaku Tete. Speaking as host at the donation of learning materials to indigent students of Model School Kuje by the Nigerian Turkish International Colleges Foundation, Tete fired the first salvo when he asked the minister to construct the Kuje-Gwagwalada road.

He received acclamation for saying this from a horde of political supporters at the event. But when the minister came to the rostrum, he said, “We’ll give you the road from Kuje to Gwagwalada. “However, you must also make sure all schools in your territory are upgraded. For instance, this school should have more greenery. It should have more plants to be lively. “We’ll do a trade-off. Kuje is very dirty. You have to find a way of clearing the refuse; it’s a shame.”

The minister thus took away the shine Tete got a moment earlier. The minister thanked the Nigerian Turkish International Colleges Foundation for the donation, saying such act could encourage children to study hard. He lamented the poor performance of school children in public examinations, and charged teachers to do better.

Operational director of  the Nigerian Turkish International Colleges Foundation, Mr Fethullah Celik, told the gathering that the foundation, which started three years ago with 3,000 beneficiaries, had grown the number of recipients to 13,000. He promised to sink a borehole for the school so as to enhance sanitary conditions.

About 500 young learners benefited from the donation in Kuje Model School. The event ended with another drama when the Director of Administration and Finance, Education Secretariat, Mrs Noami Biki was called to give a vote of thanks. After long greetings and rigmarole, she started reading a speech. She was interrupted by the anchorman, Mr Anthony Ogunleye, who said she was reading the minister’s speech.

Traditional rulers, led by the Gomo of Kuje, Alhaji Haruna Tanko, attended the event.
