Tragedy struck a Nigerian family in Maryland, United States after a fire early Tuesday morning consumed their home. Four people – two grandparents and their 2-year-old grandchildren – were found dead in the home in Prince George’s County, authorities said.
Three more occupants escaped the flames on their own, including the children’s mother person who jumped from a second-story window, suffering non-life-threatening injuries in the process. The father also made it out of the house safely.
Prince George’s County Fire Chief Marc Bashoor said the family was renting the home. An initial investigation found no working smoke detectors in the home. The fire began at 2:03 a.m. in the 6700 block of Knollbrook Drive in Chillum, Md.
The children — Anna and Israel Omijie — were rescued from the house and taken to Children’s National Medical Center where they were pronounced dead. Firefighters said Anna was pronounced dead at 2:51 a.m., Israel at 3:07 a.m.
Their grandmother was identified as Caroline Omogbo, 55, and their grandfather as Samson Omogbo, 63. Caroline Omogbo was brought out of the house by firefighters, and Samson Omogbo was found dead inside the home. Firefighters said all of the victims were found on the second floor in bedrooms.
Fire officials said “the cause and origin” of the fire are still under investigation. They said that for now they are calling the cause undetermined.
“Nothing suspicious was found during the course of the investigation,” fire officials said in a news release. Investigators said they believe the cause of the fire was accidental.
Gabriel Omogbo
The fire is the latest tragedy to befall the family as their son Gabriel Omogbo a preacher in the Celestial Church of Christ in Riverdale, USA was arrested in December accused of beating, robbing and raping prostitutes in hotels across Washington DC.
