In the days before WhatsApp, texting the object of your affection went something like this:
1. Pluck up the courage to text them
2. Spend the best part of an hour constructing a witty yet engaging message that absolutely had to end in a question, thus enticing them to reply
3. Send your beautifully constructed text
4. Await reply
5. Await some more
6. Leave your phone in one room, go watch an episode of EastEnders and fight every urge in your body to check it every 38 seconds
7. Begin to panic. What if the message hadn’t sent? What if you’d made some texting faux pas? What if you’d used the wrong there, their or they’re?
8. Start to make excuses for them. They’re probably not looking at their phone. They might be in the cinema. They might be on a date. Oh no, they might have gotten into an accident.
9. OH MY GOD THEY’VE BEEN KILLED IN AN ACCIDENT ON THE WAY TO MEET THE PERSON THEY ACTUALLY FANCY AT THE CINEMA.
But thanks to the wonder of WhatsApp and those little blue ticks, we can now avoid all this madness – well steps 7-9 anyway, we still can’t magically make people reply to our texts instantly.
For anyone who has absolutely no clue what we’re on about: on the messaging app WhatsApp, when you send someone a message a little grey tick appears next to your text. This becomes two grey ticks when it is delivered to your friend/lover/super-secret crush’s phone. When they read your message, the ticks turn blue.
However this is also not without its pitfalls. If you’re on the other side of this maniacal exchange you may not want the person to know that you’ve read their text. Maybe you’re busy. Maybe you’re mad at them. Maybe you don’t want them to know that you’re avoiding them because they text you approximately 436 times a day.
It was impossible to read messages without letting them know. Until now.
One ingenious Reddit user has shared this sneaky little life hack that may change your life. Okay, maybe that’s a bit OTT but it is a big deal.
According to Fr0zn, once you’ve received the message all you need to do is switch your phone to airplane mode. You can read the message and those little ticks won’t turn blue, even when you turn airplane mode off.
