The incident is said to have occurred at about 3am on Sunday. It’s understood that the victims, including a 58-year-old father of four identified as Sunday Ikotun, were sleeping inside two commercial buses when the trailer rammed into them.
Ikotun was badly injured in the head while the other four victims whose names had yet to be ascertained, had fractured legs. They were rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba. Policemen from the Alakara division came to the scene to evacuate the remains of the 58-year-old to a morgue, while the driver of the trailer was arrested.
According to Punch Metro, an eyewitness, Adeniyi Hassan, said the four victims, who were commercial bus drivers, had slept inside their buses because of the hot weather. He also added that the driver of the trailer, who had swerved off his lane and cleared four buses and a Passat, alerted residents to the accident.
He said, “The accident involved five persons. There were four commercial buses and a Toyota Passat. Sunday (Ikotun) slept inside the first bus. The weather was so hot that the drivers slept outside to take fresh air.
“I was in the veranda of my house when I heard the noise of the trailer ramming into the stationary buses. The trailer swerved off its lane and cleared the streetlight, before climbing the buses. There were four people sleeping in the second bus.
“With the assistance of policemen, four victims were rushed to LUTH for treatment, but Sunday died instantly. The driver said his trailer suddenly lost control of the trailer.
“The four victims have not been discharged from LUTH. We had to break the trailer’s iron bars before we could rescue them.”
According to a friend of the deceased who spoke on condition of anonymity, Ikotun had four children including twins, and had come to the area to repair his bus and pass the night when the accident occurred.
He said, “Ikotun visited this area once in a while. His bus plied Mushin and Ojuelegba areas. His wife has twins and he had brought his bus for repair in a nearby mechanic’s workshop and decided to pass the night in the place. Unfortunately, He died in the accident.”
SP Dolapo Badmos, the Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident, adding that the driver was in police custody
