There was tension at the branch of Stanbic IBTC Bank at Abesan Gate, Ipaja, Lagos, on Thursday, as fire razed the building and destroyed properties worth millions of naira.
No life was lost in the incident, as the bank’s staff managed to escape unhurt.
One of the police officers attached to the building told NAN that the fire started around 3:30pm.
The officer said the inferno started from a tanker discharging diesel into the bank’s generator plant.
He explained that a hose was attached from the tanker to the generator but suddenly a loud sound was heard from the truck where the product was being discharged.
He said consequently, the fire escalated.
As at the time of filing this report, fire fighters were still at the spot, trying to stop the fire.
The incident led to traffic gridlock along the ever-busy Abesan-Ipaja Road.
