Ekpendu disclosed this during his pull-out ceremony at the NPS Headquarters in Abuja.
“I am happy to announce to you that I have approved the promotion of 5,900 officers.
“That is my parting gift to you; I wish you all the best of luck,’’ he said.
He said that the promotion was effective from March 31, adding that the modalities for the promotion were being worked out and would take some few months.
Ekpendu, however, noted that a lot of officers in the Service were grossly undisciplined, warning that it was high time that the menace was dealt with thoroughly and squarely.
“A lot of my officers are grossly undisciplined; I do not know where we got it wrong.
“I think our colleagues in the training school; the Commandants, Principals of Colleges should take this particular one serious and our new Controller-General.
“It is important that you put machinery in motion to educate our officers on the provisions of our public service rule,” he said.
He also stressed that the issue of petitions in the service was not only alarming but terribly embarrassing to the administration and to the officers.
The out-going controller-general stressed that it was important that the officers and men of the service remained consistent in upholding the integrity of the Service.
“We must demonstrate examples that are humane and compassionate as we carry out the onerous task of managing those under our custody.
“I am confident that the management of the Service will be a little less stressful considering the fact that the government has graciously provided for increased feeding allowance and better working conditions for officers and men,’’ he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the high point of the event was the official hand-over ceremony by the out-going CG to Emmanuel Ogundele, the Acting Controller-General of Prisons.
Dignitaries at the event were, the Minister of Interior, retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Interior , Abubakar Magaji, Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo, represented by his Deputy, Prince Eze Madumere.
Others include; Sen. George Sekibo, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Interior, Adams Jagaba, the Chairman, House Committee on Interior, representatives of the Service Chiefs of the Nigerian Army, Airforce and Navy.
