Aggrieved members of the APC in Ondo are set to part ways with the party following disaffection with the free and fair emergence of Rotimi Akeredolu in the recently concluded primary election.
The All Progressives Congress in Ondo State has been divided since the result of the keenly-contested primary election that produced Rotimi Akeredolu was announced.
A report on Punch has it that some gubernatorial aspirants who have raised suspicions about the credibility of the electoral process that ushered in a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association are set to defect to opposing parties to pursue their political ambitions.
Investigations revealed that some of the aggrieved aspirants had been discussing with some less-popular parties in the state to get automatic ticket of becoming their governorship candidates for the forthcoming election.
Some of the parties with governorship candidates are, the All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, Citizen Popular Party, Social Democratic Party and Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, while others parties are yet to conduct primaries.
It was reliably gathered that some of these parties without governorship candidates have written letters to some of the losers of the APC primary to join their parties and be their flag bearers in the governorship election.
An APC leader who did not want his name mentioned confirmed to a correspondent that some of the aggrieved APC aspirants were ready to leave the party so as to become governorship candidates of other parties.
He said, "Some of the aspirants have already made up their minds to go away because they lost the primary. We wish them good luck. Let them go and try their strength in other parties.
“This is not the first time such a thing will be happening in Ondo State politics. The incumbent governor, Mimiko did it in 2007 and he won the election, so if they know they too can win the election, let them go and try their luck in other parties.”
However, the Publicity Secretary of the APC, Abayomi Adesanya, said there was no plan by any member of the party to defect. Akeredolu who has been soaring high in fame and political influence since the Saturday election has remained unfazed with the challenges facing the party as he focuses on ousting the PDP in the November 26 gubernatorial election.
