Judge withdraws from LG chairman’s murder case

Mr. Ojukaye Amachree

The murder case against the former chairman of Asari-Toru LGA in Rivers State, Ojukaye Flag-Amachree, took a fresh turn on Wednesday when the Chief Judge, Justice Adama Iyayi-Lamikanra, withdrew from handling the matter.

Though Flag-Amachree had appeared at the State High Court twice within six days, he was carried on a stretcher to the court on Wednesday by Port Harcourt Prisons officials as a result of his health condition.

The accused person had been charged with the murder of one Smart Soberekon and re-arraigned for the attempted murder of one Ipalibo Jackson.

When the matter came up, Justice Lamikanra declared that she was withdrawing from the case as a result of several petitions by the accused person to the National Judicial Council against her.

Explaining that the NJC had commenced investigation based on the petitions, Justice Lamikanra said she would transfer the case to another judge in the interest of justice.

She, however, ordered that the accused person be remanded in prison custody after the charge had been read to him.

Justice Lamikanra had also dismissed the bail application of the accused person before adjourning the matter till November 17, 2016.
