FEELERS from the Anambra State House of Assembly yesterday indicated that the lawmakers were perfecting plans to impeach the Speaker, Mrs. Rita Maduagwu.
Those behind the plan were said to have met in a hotel in Awka Tuesday and by yesterday, many of them had appended their signatures in support of the impeachment.
It was gathered that as at noon yesterday, 21 out of the 30 legislators in the House had appended their signatures for the impeachment, which might take place during today’s plenary.
It was not clear at press time the reason for the impeachment, but some of the lawmakers were alleging that the Speaker was ‘eating alone’ and therefore needed to be shoved aside.
Another source said the impeachment had something to do with next year’s governorship election in which some of the lawmakers want to threaten the Speaker to be able to extract something from Governor Willie Obiano before the commencement of the campaigns.
The Speaker, who spoke in a telephone interview, however, dismissed the action of the lawmakers, saying that she was perfectly under control.
The Anambra House of Assembly is made up of 28 members of the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and two from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
