2 versions of DSS report on Magu circulate in Senate

2 versions of DSS report on Magu circulate in Senate

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Acting Chairman Ibrahim Mustafa Magu

The Senate is presently in possession of two versions of security reports of the Department of State Services (DSS) on the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ibrahim Magu, Daily Trust not Thenigerialawyer has reliably gathered.

Impeccable sources at the Senate said the two reports were signed by Mrs. Folashade Bello on behalf of the Director General of the DSS, Lawal Daura.

Senators who spoke on condition of anonymity said the reports contained contradicting recommendations on Magu. The Senate on Thursday declined the confirmation of Magu over the DSS report.

It was gathered that while one of the reports was addressed to the Clerk to the Senate, the other was written to the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly (Senate), Senator Ita Enang.

In the one addressed to the Clerk and seen by Daily Trust, the DSS said Magu failed integrity test and would eventually constitute a liability to the anti-corruption drive of the present administration.

Our correspondent gathered that the one addressed to Senator Enang contradicted that of the Clerk as the service said Magu can be considered for the job.

A Senator who had seen the DSS report addressed to Enang said, “The DSS recommended Magu for the job. In fact, it said Magu should be considered for the job”.

He said at the executive session on Thursday only the one that was addressed to the Clerk was read and discussed.

“We cannot act on any of the reports. They are only for our information and not for action. It is only Mr. President’s letter that can be read on the floor. And for your information, we don’t approve or reject nominee at executive sessions,” he said.

Contacted Senator Enang requested to be excuse from speaking on the matter.

Contacted, the Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume said Magu has not been rejected.

“We only said we cannot proceed on his screening because we are in receipt of report on him by DSS. We are waiting for further clarification from the President,” he said in a phone interview yesterday.

Ndume also told State House correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday that Senate has not rejected Magu’s nomination.

Earlier yesterday, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami met behind closed-doors with President Buhari.
