Anti-corruption: Ribadu’s alleged secret scheme against Buhari exposed

Ribadu wants favour from Buhari - Nwabueze

- Professor Ben Nwabueze has challenged Nuhu Ribadu to show how his actions undermined the war against corruption in the country

- Nwabueze describes Ribadu’s claims that some senior lawyers opposed the anti-graft war as an attempt to curry favour with the Buhari's administration

Prof Nwabueze has faulted claims by Ribadu that some senior lawyers frustrated the ant-graft war when he (Ribadu) was the chairman the EFCC.
Professor Ben Nwabueze has accused former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Malam Nuhu Ribadu of trying to curry favour with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Ribadu had recently accused Ben Nwabueze, former attorney general and minister of justice, Michael Aondoakaa, and his successor at the EFCC, Farida Waziri of frustrating the country’s efforts to fight against the cancer of corruption.

But Nwabueze reacting to Ribadu’s allegations, in a statement on Monday, December 5, challenged the former EFCC boss to show how actions undermined the war against corruption in the country.

He said that Ribadu’s accusation a mere attempt to curry favour with the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, Vanguard reports.

“My attention has been drawn to what Mallam Nuhu Ribadu said about me at a lecture organised by the Law Chambers of Joe Kyari Gadzama on Thursday December 1, 2016 on the theme, ‘Corruption and the Nigerian Economy: Lawyers as Change Agents.; He said, among other things, that I, with others, teamed up with politicians to frustrate and undermine the country’s efforts to fight corruption, and to discredit the work he, as chairman of the EFCC, was doing in prosecuting the war," he said.

Nwabueze said Nuhu Ribadu was trying to whip up sentiments in favour of himself, to play to the gallery or to curry favours with the Buhari Administration.

He called on Ribadu to provide concrete evidence in rebuttal of the facts he (Nwabueze) stated in his write-up, in order to show that the Ribadu’s actions as chairman of the EFCC are not subversive of the Nigerian constitution.

Meanwhile, the politics surrounding the confirmation of the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, has been adduced to opposition from forces withing the presidency and the Senate.

Magu was appointed in acting chairman of the anti-graft agency in November 2015, but his confirmation has been shrouded in controversy as some power brokers are reportedly opposed to his confirmation.

Leadership, citing sources close to the presidency reports that although President Muhammadu Buhari does not mind the confirmation of Magu, forces around him are opposed to it.
