ICPC Report Exposes Corrupt, Sharp Practices At Lagos, Abuja Airports

CHAIRMAN of Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, Mr. Ekpo Nta

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC said the Lagos, Abuja international airports are riddled with corruption and sharp practices and need proper sanitising.

Speaking at the public presentation of the report of the Corruption Risk Assessment (CRA) of Lagos and Abuja international airports in Abuja, the chairman of the Commission, Barrister Ekpo Nta said part of the findings showed that 62.2 percent of passengers said officials normally demand bribes or gifts when carrying out their duties while 55 percentages said the integrity of officials is low.

The report also showed that 52.5 percent of passengers surveyed confirmed that they have had cause to pay a bribe or tip to airport officials Part of the report also showed that there is no standardised unified stand of operation for use in the airports as officials of different agencies, rely on their agency thereby creating misunderstanding, confusion and clashes among officials.

However, the ICPC boss commended Nigeria airports for having one of the best scanning systems in the world; even as the report suggested the limited posting tenure of two years and regular staff rotation within beats.
The report also suggested granting autonomy to FAAN and NCAA to source and structure funding arrangements with the private sector to purchase and maintain critical equipment.

Meanwhile, the ministry of Transportation, represented by deputy director, special duties, Nina Chuku, has agreed to carefully study the report and properly implement all recommendations there in which seek to better the activities of Nigeria airports.

The Memorandum of Understanding, MoU to carry out the Corruption Risk Assessment of the two airports was signed between the ICPC and the ministry of aviation in 2014 ‎with the target of identifying and recommending actions to close corruption loopholes.
