Tukur, who spoke in Abuja yesterday after a closed door meeting with the PDP factional Chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, however, advised that the party would remain strong so long as it follows the philosophy of its founding fathers.

That was the first time the elder statesman would speak concerning the PDP leadership crisis. Tukur, who has quit partisan politics earlier this year, had blamed the party’s loss of the 2015 presidential election on his removal as PDP national chairman.
”We have been preaching election, not selection, internal democracy not imposition. Anywhere it was done, it will leave a bitter pill in the mouth,” he had stated after the presidential election. Tukur was removed as PDP chairman in January 2014, and Sheriff, who is from the same North East geopolitical zone was brought in last February to complete his tenure.
Though details of the discussion was not immediately known as at press time, a source at the meeting however said it was not unconnected with the leadership crisis in PDP.

According to the source, the visit was part of Sheriff’s reach out to some elders of the party to resolve the crisis. He recalled that the factional chairman had visited former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the immediate past President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. Tukur, who described Sheriff as his son, said he had been waiting for him to come for advice.
