The clean stove project of the Goodluck Jonathan administration is under investigation following suspicion that huge sum of money was laundered.

Leadership reports that the House of Representative resolved to carry out an investigation into the initiative which was supposed to benefit women in rural areas.

The committees on Anti-Corruption and Environment and Habitat were mandated by the House to “investigate the details of the contract, the number of units supplied, their mode of distribution and names of beneficiaries on a State by State basis.”

The committee is also expected to “determine the status of the balance of N952,000,000 that is with the contractor since 750,000 units of the clean stoves were supplied at a unit cost of N464 at the value of N348,000,000 out of the N1.3 Billion paid out.”

The House also wants to know if the project is assisting women and preventing desertification for future recommendation.

It also wants to find out the status of the balance of N3.7bn which was outstanding from the initial payment to the Federal Ministry of Environment.

Hon. James Abiodun Faleke representing Ikeja federal constituency sponsored the motion and noted that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved a contract for the supply of 20 million units of clean stove and wonder bags at N464.00 at a total of N9, 287, 250,000.

He added that of N5 billion was released by the Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala-led Ministry of Finance for the project.

He explained that due process was not followed when Messrs. Integra Energy Renewable Services Ltd was awarded the contract for the supply of the 20 million units and was paid the sum of N1.3bn out of the N5bn released by the Federal Ministry of Environment as mobilization fee.

“Less than 750,000 units were said to have been assembled and delivered at the velodrome of the National Stadium, Abuja and commissioned by former Vice President, Namadi Sambo without any beneficiary being present or later being given the stove to achieve.”
