President Muhammadu Buhari has sent a congratulatory message to Chief John Nwodo as he emerges as the president-general of the Ohaneze Ndigbo just as he said he would continue to work for the development and unity of the country.
Chief Nwodo won with 242 votes to beat his closest contender, Prof Chiweyite Ejike who got 13 votes.

In a statement released on Wednesday, January 11 by Garba Shehu, President Buhari described the emergence of Nwodo as president of Ohaneze Ndigbo as great and said he was highly qualified to lead the group.
President Buhari congratulates Nwodo on Ohaneze leadership position
Buhari said Nwodo’s services as minister of civil aviation in the Second Republic under President Shehu Shagari and minister of information and culture during the administration of General Abdulsalami Abubakar made him perfect for the position.
He said as Chief Nwodo prepares to settle down with his team to implement his vision for Ohaneze Ndigbo, Ndi Igbo as well as the wider community of Nigerians should support the new leadership to fulfil their mandate in these challenging times.
Part of the statement read: "President Buhari looks forward to working with the new leadership, and assures Ohaneze Ndigbo that his administration will continue to be a partner-in-progress in implementing suggestions, measures and programmes to advance the unity, development and prosperity of Nigeria.
"The President wishes the Chief Nwodo-led Ohaneze Ndigbo a peaceful and prosperous tenure."
