The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday rejected a request by a former Enugu State Chief Judge, Innocent Umezulike, to travel out of the country for medical treatment.
Umezulike had been invited by the EFCC after about N632.2m was allegedly found in his bank account.
He was supposed to have submitted himself for questioning at the Port Harcourt office of the EFCC on Tuesday but failed to show up.
A reliable source at the EFCC said the retired judge sent a letter to the EFCC informing the commission of his health status.
The source said, “The judge was supposed to have come to our office for questioning but he sent a letter stating that he had health challenges and had to travel out of the country.
“He said he would honour our invitation once he returned but he did not state when he would return.

“We immediately rejected the request because the ideal thing for him to have done was to honour our invitation first. He is expected to report to our office on Thursday.
“If his case is genuine, he may be allowed to travel.”
EFCC detectives had traced over N600m to the Umezulike’s account a few weeks ago. Some of the money allegedly emanated from lawyers and politicians.
The said account was allegedly operated without a Bank Verification Number.
About three properties were allegedly traced to the retired judge whose salary was said to be about N700,000 per month.
Umezulike was on September 29, 2016 recommended for compulsory retirement by the National Judicial Council.
