Gambia's new President Barrow makes fresh promises, gives thanks to Buhari

The Gambia has a new president since January 19, 2017

- President Adama Barrow of The Gambia has promised to make life good for his people now that peace has returned to the embattled West African country

- Barrow promised security of life, opening opportunity for productive ventures so as to make the people self reliant

- He also appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari, the ECOWAS and the United Nations over the role they played to ensure the realisation of his mandate

The new president of Gambia has assured the people of the country of adequate security, just as he also promised to leave behind an enviable legacy at the end of his tenure.

Barrow, who was greatly supported by world powers and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), also said his government will create opportunity for the people to be involved in production so that the people will not be fully dependent on other countries for their means of livelihood.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Barrow expressed appreciation to all governments, individuals, nations and all institutions that supported him to ensure the realization of his mandate.

He specifically appreciated Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari for the special role he played and the ECOWAS for the restoration of democracy in The Gambia.

He said the people of The Gambia would remain dogged and resilient for the government to deliver dividends of democracy to the people of the country.

Gambian President Adama Barrow has expressed appreciation for all efforts that contributed to the handing over of power to him from Yahaya Jammeh who is now on exile.

According to him: “We are going to redeem all items in our manifesto for the benefit of the people. Gambia is back and we are ready to move it forward.

“We are also going to encourage people, especially Nigerians, to invest in the country and create more employment.

“We will encourage them and other foreign investors to go into production.”

For the last two weeks, the nationals and non-citizens of the country had tough time following the unwillingness of the outgone President Yahya Jammeh to surrender power to Barrow.

But the intervention of the ECOWAS, the United Nations backed with the military force compelled Jammeh to step down.
