More than $11 million (£8.8m; €10.3m) is reportedly missing from The Gambia's state coffers following the departure of long-time leader Yahya Jammeh, who clung to power for nearly two months despite losing the presidential election in December.

Jammeh left the seat he occupied for 22 years after his defeat by Adama Barrow and after a meeting with some heads of government within a tense period that saw many residents fleeing the country.

The Gambia's ex-ruler, Yahya Jammeh, allegedly plundered the state coffers in his final weeks in power, stealing millions of dollars and shipping out luxury vehicles by cargo plane, according to an aide to new president Adama Barrow.

He had refused to concede defeat in a December 1 election but eventually relinquished power after a delegation of West African leaders convinced him to step down, even as troops from neighbouring countries entered The Gambia.
