Ekweremadu is making a move to stop Senator Nelson Effiong (PDP, Akwa-Ibom South) from decamping to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to the report, Effiong is set to announce his defection to the APC today, January 19.
Effiong is said to be at loggerheads with the Akwa Ibom state governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel who is reportedly grooming his successor for 2019.
His defection was discussed during the PDP caucus meeting held at the Senate hearing room 1 on Tuesday, January 17.
At the meeting, members of the PDP caucus reportedly kicked against the defection move, even as Ekweremadu had agreed, at the meeting, to mediate between Effiong and Governor Udom Emmanuel.
“The senator (Nelson Effiong) is leaving PDP because of the rift between him and the governor of his state. So, at the meeting, the caucus resolved to mediate between them,” an unnamed senator quoted in the report said.
Another senator said Governor Emmanuel is expected to attend a meeting today, January 19.
His words: “If Ekweremadu and the caucus are able to address the issue, he may not decamp but, honestly, he has concluded arrangements to do so.
“Effiong wanted to announce his defection today (yesterday) but since it was Ekweremadu that presided over the plenary, he decided to leave it till tomorrow (today).”
When contacted, Effiong’s media aide, Edem Okwong, said his boss was being frustrated by the governor.
“The governor is grooming somebody to take over my boss’ seat when he (my boss) is not eying his seat. Certainly by this, he is asking him to seek another platform,” he said.
Meanwhile, following APC senator, Kabiru marafa’s call to Ekweremadu to decamp to APC, the PDP has now released a statement to address the issue.
PDP refers to APC’s attempt to woo Ekweremadu to its party as unconstitutional and undemocratic.
