- Gambia's President Yahya Jammeh has damned all consequences and refused to step down as his tenure ends and the deadline given to him by ECOWAS expired at midnight January 18, 2017
- The president is however becoming more isolated as more trusted aides have continued to desert him for refusing to step down from power

In anticipation of military action from ECOWAS troops stationed in Senegal, thousands of Gambians are fleeing the country as President Yahya Jammeh remained resolute in his refusal to step down from power.
ECOWAS and African leaders have vowed to use military force in dislodging him from power if he refuses to vacate power at the expiration of his tenure today, January 19.
The regional organisation, which gave the embattled president an ultimatum to step down by midnight on Wednesday, January 18, will be expected to make true its vow of forcing Mr Jammeh out of power through military intervention.
And as a result of the uncertainties of an eventual military action in the tiny West African state, citizens are now fleeing the country in thousands so as not to be caught up in a bloody conflict that may follow.
Meanwhile, Gambia’s army chief, Ousman Badjie has said he would not order his men to fight other African troops if they enter the Gambian territory.
He made this known on Wednesday, January 18.
