Police Burst Boko Haram’s Cells In Kano, Arrest 53

As part of efforts to stop the regrouping of Boko Haram insurgents in Kano state and rid the state of their menace, the state police command said it had burst a sleepers’ cell suspected to be operated by the terrorists.

Some weeks ago, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje raised the alarm that the state was witnessing an influx of the insurgents who were dislodged from the North-East.

But in a swift move, the police, civil defence corps, Hisbah and members of the state vigilante group, following intelligence reports, arrested 53 Boko Haram suspects in various black spots in the city.

The state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Magaji Musa Majia, told reporters while parading 840 suspects across the metropolis that 53 of the arrested suspects were suspected Boko Haram members, who were from the North-East.

He said already, the 53 suspects were undergoing serious intelligence interrogation as they were cooperating with the authorities.

Majia said: “Police launched the special operation following a security report that some insurgents from the North-East were planning to launch an attack on Kano and we succeeded in arresting 53 people, who came from that region. Whoever among them is found to be a terrorist will face the wrath of the law.”

He said 111 of the arrested people were foreigners picked up during the raid, adding that the breakdown showed that 101 were from Niger Republic, one from Ghana, one from Gambia and one from Sierra Leone.

Majia said the suspects included 67 minors, 112 women and 544 men, 90 percent of the women were commercial sex workers though.

He added that the foreigners among them would be handed over to the Nigerian Immigration Service for deportation to their respective countries.

The PPRO also said that the suspected prostitutes would be taken to court, adding that the minors would be handed over to their respective parents.

Majia assured that the operation would be sustained for some time, urging members of the public to support security agencies with useful information that would help reduce crime in the state.
