After menopause, more sex strengthens women’s bones

After menopause, more sex strengthens women’s bones

Many menopausal women make the mistakes of avoiding sex simply because they are trying to understand the new biological experience that is going on in their bodies.

Yet, scientists are saying that since menopause leads to reduction of bone-building hormone, oestrogen, in the body, menopausal women need to get the bones going through sound dietary habits and healthy sexual intercourse!

American researchers found that menopausal women who had sex every week had oestrogen levels twice as high as their abstaining counterparts.

What this means is that, if you have reached menopause, your oestrogen level will begin to drop — a situation that usually leads to weak and porous bones. However, if you have regular sex, you will double the oestrogen level, compared to menopausal women who abstain from sex.

“The hormone has a protective effect in bone health and a lack of it after the menopause has been linked with osteoporosis.

“Regular sex increases the production of oestrogen,” says Dr. Peter Bowen-Simpkins of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

The bottom line: Have more sex!
