Politics Senate Abandons Protest, Screens Buhari's REC Nominees

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday began screening of the 27 INEC Resident Election Commissioners sent to it by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Eight of the twenty-seven nominees were screened on Wednesday and the exercise is expected to continue on Thursday.

This is coming seven weeks after the lawmakers suspended consideration of the nominee in protest against the retention of Mr. Ibrahim Magu as Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by Buhari despite his rejection by the legislature.

The ultimatum had expired on April 11, 2017, but the matter was not raised in the Senate chamber until May 2, 2017, when the lawmakers considered Buhari’s request for legislative approval on the nominations.
