The Commander, Zone 8, FRSC, John Meheux, stated this on Thursday in Ado Ekiti while speaking with journalists at the first 2017 bi-annual RS8 zonal retreat with the theme, ‘Rebuilding the corporate image of the corps’.
Zone 8 is in charge of Ekiti, Kwara and Kogi states.
The Lagos State Government recently suggested that the FRSC should limit its operation to the highways.
But responding to a question from journalists, Meheux said accidents did not know boundaries, adding that rescuing accident victims was part of the duties of the corps.
“There are crashes on state roads. Fatal crashes are not limited to highways. Are you saying the FRSC should not be involved in rescue operation? We will continue to partner state governments wherever we can.
“There could be crashes on state roads and we’ll come to assist. Our duty is not limited to patrol, rescue is an integral part of our duties.”
Meheux commended motorists in the zone for cooperating with the FRSC on the use of speed-limit device.
“The importance of the speed-limit device cannot be over-emphasised. The compliance level in zone 8 is encouraging,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Ekiti Sector Commander of the FRSC, Ismaila Kugu, has raised the alarm over the high accident rate in Ekiti in the last four months.
According to him, Ekiti last year recorded 49 automobile crashes, including 19 deaths.
“Between January and April this year, the trend is high and we are concerned. We have recorded 16 crashes and 11 deaths in the first four months of this year,” he said.
Kugu advised motorists to avoid speeding and observe traffic signs.
