The Senate on Wednesday took away the power of the President to solely appoint the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service.
Beginning from now, the appointment of the Customs CG will be subjected to Senate confirmation.
This followed the passage of the Bill seeking to amend the Customs Act by the Senate.

The Bill went into third reading on Wednesday.
This equally followed the clause by clause consideration of the report on the amendment of the Customs Service Management Act.
The Senate Committee on Customs, headed by Senator Hope Uzodinma, amended 65 clauses in the Act.
Eight sub-clauses were deleted, while nine new ones were inserted.
The decision to withdraw the sole power of the President to appoint the Customs CG without recourse to the Senate, was premised on the fact that the position was too sensitive for the occupant not to be scrutinised.
It was said to be aimed at ensuring that the best candidates occupy the position.
The amendment, in clause 13, section (1), reads: “The President shall appoint from the Customs Service, subject to the confirmation of the Senate, a Comptroller-General….”
