Special Assistant to the President on Prosecution, Mr. Okoi Obono-Obla stated this at the Headquarters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja while fielding questions from journalists.
According to Obono-Obla, who is also an aide to the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN) also stated that the recently signed budget would be financed 20% from the from recovered monies.
He stated that the plea bargain as practised in the present administration of the Criminal Act of 2015.
Speaking on the issue of plea bargaining, he said: “Plea bargaining is part and parcel of our law. I can mention the section. Section 270 to section 274 of the administration of Criminal Act, 2015.
That law came into operation in 2015 few days that we came into office. So, we didn’t make that law but it is Nigerian law, which means plea bargaining is legitimate; it is legal and there is nothing absolutely wrong with plea bargaining.
“Criminal law is all about conviction; putting people in prisons. So, if somebody has committed an offence and he said okay l want to an agreement, rather than going for 12 years imprisonment, l will go for five years imprisonment and he returns what he has taken from the government treasury. Is that not good?”
