Saraki’s acquittal: Why Attorney-General must resign

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN

The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has call for the removal of the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami a senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) over Wednesday’s acquittal of Senate President Bukola Saraki by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

Saraki was acquitted in the 18-count charge of false and anticipatory assets declaration, filed against him since September 2015 by the Federal Government by the two-man panel of the tribunal led by its Chairman, Danladi Umar who upheld his no-case submission, holding that the evidence led by the prosecution was discredited under cross-examination and therefore unreliable.

But the Executive Director of CHRICED Dr. Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi said yesterday in a statement that certain fundamental issues are apparent from the judicial outcome.

“First, it is abundantly clear that the anti-corruption crusade has been mortgaged by the band of thieving elite bent on cornering the resources of the nation, and holding down the country’s development agenda.

Regrettably, the anti-graft war has been compromised through a grand conspiracy involving corrupt actors, who cut across all the three arms of government.

“Secondly, the Nigerian judicial systems, and all the pretenders in the so called temple of justice, have failed the Nigerian people. The operators of the current judicial system should therefore bury their heads in shame.

At this rate, it will not be surprising if Nigerians wake to hear that the recently arrested kidnap kingpin (Evans) if brought before the courts is asked to go home, in spite of his heinous crimes,” Zikirullahi said.

He said it is clear that the All Progressives Congress (APC) neither has the strategy nor the commitment to deal decisively with corruption and that the party has become so accommodating to corruption that it is no longer different from the PDP that it called corrupt and which it replaced in 2015.

“This means that Nigerians must begin the search for a viable alternative to the APC contraption.

CHRICED calls for the immediate resignation of the current Attorney-General of the Federation, for leading the justice machine of the country to such an embarrassing situation, where indicted felons are now routinely winning “victories” over the government and by extension the people of Nigeria, it is time for Mr. Abubakar Malami to quit or get the boot.
