Saraki leads Senators to National Hospital over Melaye, summons IGP, shuts down session

Senate Wednesday lamented the brazen humiliation meted out to one of their own, embattled senator Dino Melaye and consequently invited the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to appear before the hallowed chamber tomorrow morning for explanations.

It also alleged that there are indices of threats to the survival of democracy in the country ranging from the executive alleged Gestapo actions, inactions and prevailing insecurity and carnage everywhere in the land.

Very worrisome was even the fact that many senators were reportedly barred from seeing their colleague presently on admission at the Abuja National Hospital.

In the brief session held today, there were absolute condemnations and disapproval of police action by majority of the senators in the red chambers.

This development followed an adopted motion moved by senator Samuel Anyanwu representing Imo East.

Anyawu in his personal explanation said, “What is happening today is a threat to democracy. It is not about Dino Melaye but the senate and institution of the parliament. It may be any of us tomorrow. Everybody here has become a target in the hands of the power that be.

“I hope this is not the change Nigerians voted for. There is a line between those who likes President Buhari and those who hate him. It is not a good sign for the survival of democracy. There are indices of fear, anxiety and depression everywhere”

As at the time of filing this report, the Senate led by Senate president, Abubakar Bukola Saraki is on the way to National Hospital, Abuja to ascertain the the state of Melaye’s health.

There was report as declared in the floor of the red chamber that the police had threatened to move Melaye in his present condition to an undisclosed location but the conditions the hospital medical director gave them put them down.
