Lawan won with a total of 79 votes while his opponent, Senator Ali Ndume garnered only 28 votes.
Where the total number of APC senators stand at 62, YPP has 1 and PDP 44 senators.
If all the 62 senators of the APC and Ifeanyi Ubah of the YPP voted for Lawan, it therefore means that 16 senators-elect of the PDP also voted for Lawan to become the Senate President.
We recall that the opposition party, PDP, had earlier endorsed Senator-elect Ali Ndume for the position of the Senate President but its members as shown by the total votes cast apparently went against the party’s decision.
