Senate President Ahmad Lawan, his deputy, Ovie Omo-Agege, House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Ahmed Idris Wase and Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on Wednesday congratulated House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila on his 58th birthday anniversary.

In a statement by his Special Adviser (Media), Ola Awoniyi, in Abuja, Lawan said: “Gbajabiamila has made robust contributions to building our Legislature to effectively play its role as a bulwark and foremost institution of democracy.

“In the Ninth Assembly, he has been a dependable partner in the efforts to focus the Legislature on entrenching democratic practices and patriotically helping the government to continually improve service delivery to the Nigerian people.

“Mr Speaker and I have a common vision of the role of the National Assembly in nation-building and national development and he has been consistent in the dogged pursuit of all that he considers to be in the best interest of our country,” Lawan said.

Omo-Agege hailed the Speaker for piloting the affairs of the Green Chamber in tandem with the Next Level Agenda of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

“Honourable Speaker, your 17 years in the Green Chamber dearly attest to your personal qualities, including high intellect and deep knowledge of the workings of a legislature; your 14 years as a principal officer, first as a Minority Whip from 2005 to 2007, Minority Leader (Opposition Leader) from 2007 to 2015 and later as Leader of the House/Majority Leader between 2015 and 2019, all reflect your populist and patriotic disposition.

“As the first Nigerian to have risen from the position of Minority Leader to Majority Leader and then to Speaker, your passionate commitment to progressive ideals and the people-focused objectives of our party have never been in doubt.”

Wase described Gbajabiamila as a strong believer in team work to achieve a set objective.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Umar Mohammed Puma, reads: “…There is no better experience than working closely and jointly with you in the quest to bequeath good leadership through the instrumentality of the legislature to the people of Nigeria.

“Mr. Speaker, your patriotism, humility and obsession with justice, equity and team work is unparalleled. I will forever cherish the cordial working relationship we have had.

“Your sterling leadership qualities have brought peace and stability to the House of Representatives, which account for the unprecedented achievements the Chamber has recorded since June 11, 2019.”

The governing APC described the Speaker as a committed promoter of the independence of the Legislature.

A statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, said: “Our great party is proud to associate with this outstanding lawmaker, who, in the last 16 years as a member of the National Assembly, has deployed his intellect, organisational and leadership skills to promote and advance the interests of the country and the good of all Nigerians.

“It is particularly noteworthy that the Speaker’s robust and excellent contributions on the floor of the House has, in no small measure, ensured the independence of the legislative arm of government and its complementary role with the Executive towards building and sustaining a viable democracy and working for the uplifting of socio-economic conditions of the common man.”

Okowa’s congratulatory message in Asaba, the state capital, by his Chief Press Secretary, Olisa Ifeajika, reads: “The House under your leadership made huge progress by introducing a total of 853 Bills as against the 634 recorded in the Eighth Assembly.

“I must commend the robust relationship between the Legislature and the Executive under your leadership as Speaker of the 9th Assembly.

“Mr Speaker, under your leadership, the Green Chamber remains dedicated to the task of passing people-oriented Bills, which include the record-passing of 2020 Appropriation Bill and its subsequent signing by President Muhammadu Buhari before the end of 2019.”

“I urge Mr Speaker and his honourable colleagues to ensure passage of Bills concerning critical matters of nationhood and citizens’ wellbeing.

“On behalf of my family, the government and people of Delta, I congratulate you, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, on the occasion of your 58th birth anniversary.

“I join your family, colleagues, political associates, friends and well-wishers to thank Almighty God for your life which has been marked by outstanding accomplishments and enduring fulfilment.

“As you deservedly celebrate this anniversary, it is my prayer that Almighty God continues to bless you with robust health and more years of happiness and contributions to nation-building,” Okowa said.
