Information obtained from perusing Govspend, a government portal that tracks and analyses federal government spending over time, has shown how Umar Mohammad Tanko, a staff of the National Institute for Freshwater Fisheries Research (NIFFR), used his company, Wadatau Energy Resources Limited, to secure juicy contracts worth ₦272,369,122.4
It was discovered that on January 27, 2022, the Federal Ministry of Health (Hqtrs) made a payment of ₦187,766,057.50 to Wadatau Energy Resources Limited being full payment for the supply and installation of medical equipment at Jega general Hospital, Jega, Kebbi State.
On December 18, 2018, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps made a payment of ₦63,333,333.34 to Wadatau Energy Resources Limited, being payment for the construction of an admin complex with in-built cell and armoury
On March 26, 2022, the National Commission for Refugees made a payment of ₦21,269,731.56 to Wadatau Energy Resources Limited, being payment for the supply of water pump for irrigation to Aliero/Gwandu/Jega Fed. Const. Kebbi State.
The company, Wadatau Energy Resources Limited, was registered on the August 16 2016 with registration number 1354860 in Kano State.
It was discovered that Wadatau Energy Resources Limited has four key management personnel, among who is Mr. Umar Mohammad Tanko, a senior statistician at the National Institute for Freshwater Fisheries Research (NIFFR).
This action contravenes the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Acts, which state that public officials should not own or run a private company while employed as full-time staff. However, such laws do not apply if the company or business is in the farming sector.
